Building Science 01

Project 01  Case Study: Analysing Passive Building Design Strategies

In a group of 6, we need to analyse a building to identify the basic building design for thermal comfort and record, analyse the existing condition in terms of thermal comfort of the interior which are directly affected by the environmental factors such as sun and wind.

We would then need to thorough research on the basic design strategies and existing thermal comfort level and environmental factors affecting it. All environmental factors (4) for a day and average for a year were documented.  A passive design was proposed and the principles, strategies and details needed to perform best in tropical climate in order to achieve thermal comfort in the building/space were elaborated. It was proved with appropriate methods; eg. That heat gain is reduced through calculations of before and after. The findings were then concluded with photograph/sketches of the interior ambiences and outline the thermal comfort of before and after. Explicitly detail visuals and narrate strategies that accompany the design feature were included and basic site analysis that is related to the design were recorded.

A proposal to achieve thermal comfort in the chosen space/building was proposed and the design features were elaborated with details, the effect on thermal comfort and the importance of it. Research, findings and proposal were neatly compiled in 2A3, presented in a well-organized and logical manner.

Reflection

Throughout this project, I'm able to put theories into practice, identify, extract and define the principles of heat transfer in relation to building and people. I understood what is thermal comfort and could discuss factors relating to thermal comfort and come out with different ideas/ design referring to MS1525 , UBBL,GBI standards to reduce it. I could identify environmental conditions related to site conditions, climate, etc, explain the effects of the sun on the thermal performance of buildings, insulation, thermal mass and air movement on thermal performance of buildings. We understood the importance of team dynamics and mobilised the power of teams. Although each part were allocated to different group members but if there's anything that one of us do not understand, we would explain it to each other. I'm also able to define and analyse problems arise and criticise the design of the space in terms of thermal comfort.
